Lifelong exercise helps seniors keep their hearts healthy, new research shows.

Healthy people over age 65 -- without any chronic diseases were recruited from another study in which they'd been reporting their weekly physical activity for the previous 15 to 25 years.

The participants underwent cardiopulmonary stress tests, ultrasounds of the heart and blood vessels, and other tests to assess their heart health. The results showed that the more exercise participants had done during their lives (measured by the number of days per week of exercise training), the more likely they were to have preserved the healthy characteristics of their heart.
Those who exercised four to five times a week during their lives had about 54 percent of the benefit seen in "Master" athletes, while those who exercised two to three times a week had 42 percent of the benefit.
Master athletes are seniors who've exercised six to seven times a week for 15 to 25 years and retained 100 percent of their heart's youthful characteristics and have hearts similar to those of 30-year-olds.
If you have been inactive, it is not too late to increase the health of your heart. Talk to your health professional about any precautions you should take before beginning an exercise program.
The results of this study shows that exercsie is a fountain of youth that anyone can dive into.

Healthy Lifestyle Tip: Boost Your Brain Perhaps the most striking brain research today is the strong evidence that exercise may prevent some kinds of mental decline.Next time you are feeling uninspired, puzzled or stumped, don't bang your head against the wall, get moving. Even a short 20-minute bout of exercise might be enough to unlock your mental block, says Philip Tomporowski, Ph.D. an exercise scientist at the University of Georgia. It's no surprise that exercise can put pep in your step and a smile on your face. The connection between cardiovascular activity and mood is more than a feeling, it's a scientific fact. There is growing evidence that exercise makes you smarter, enhances your ability to solve problems, brainstorm ideas and think fast. "If I had to pick between fitness training and brain training, I'd go with fitness," said Sam Wang, an associate professor of neuroscience and molecular biology at Princeton University. So far, he said, physical exercise has been shown to have an effect several times larger than computer-brain exercises. The best thing you can do for your brain is to move your body.

Chair exercises are a great form of exercise for older adults, for those with disabilities, for people with poor balance, or for anyone else who has trouble standing or getting onto the floor to do regular exercise.

Chair exercise for seniors can also be done in the office in the course of the workday when you need energy and as a eas, practical way to work some activity into your day.

Chair exercises are gentle on the body and are generally safe for most people to do. You should talk to your doctor before beginning a any exercise program, but it's not likely you'll injure yourself doing any of these exercises.

Chair exercises for seniors should be performed in a straight, sturdy chair. Folding chairs are not safe and do not provide proper lumbar support. Keep your posture straight in the chair with your feet flat on the floor, unless otherwise instructed.
